Purdue Day of Service volunteers refresh campus before commencement

In honor of Earth Week, 84 volunteers gathered at Purdue’s West Lafayette location for the spring 2025 Purdue Day of Service on Friday, April 25.

Volunteers helped the Purdue Grounds Department beautify campus before commencement during the sixth installment of this signature event, hosted by the Purdue for Life Foundation. Purdue Day of Service provides a chance for volunteers to connect with fellow Purdue alumni and friends and give back to the university they love.

Despite rain showers, volunteers were hard at work spreading 160 cubic yards of mulch around the landscaping at the Charles J. Lynn Hall of Veterinary Medicine and the Arthur G. Hansen Life Sciences Research Building, Memorial Mall, and other locations near Mitch Daniels Boulevard. They planted 142 perennials at Hansen and 30 trees at Lynn Hall. So far, volunteers have planted 924 trees in the history of this event.

Purdue University and the Purdue for Life Foundation created Purdue Day of Service in 2021 to encourage alumni and friends of the university to embrace volunteerism. The event supports Purdue’s Sustainability Master Plan and its ongoing commitment as a certified Tree Campus and Bee Campus.

Tyler Trent’s enduring impact

Many may recognize the name Tyler Trent and associate it with words like superfan, Boilermaker, or hero. They may think of a Motion P–covered suit jacket, a hashtag, or a spirited buzz cut. But Tyler Trent (AS T’18) was more than a Purdue student battling a cancer diagnosis, and his fight for a cure for pediatric cancer continues today.
