IRA Qualified Charitable Distributions

Making a gift to Purdue through an IRA Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) allows you to support the university while satisfying your required minimum distribution (RMD) and excluding the donated amount from your taxable income.

QCDs are available to individuals who are age 70 1/2 or older at the time of the distribution.

Even before RMDs become mandatory, making QCDs can offer long-term tax advantages. Because RMDs are calculated based on your IRA balance at the end of the previous calendar year and your life expectancy, a larger account balance generally results in a larger RMD—and potentially a higher tax bill. By making QCDs before you are required to take RMDs, you can gradually reduce your IRA balance, potentially lowering future RMDs while also advancing your philanthropic goals.

How do I make a gift?

  1. Inform us of your plans to make an IRA QCD/RMD gift by sharing the following:
    • Your name and the amount of the gift
    • Name of your IRA plan administrator
    • Gift designation (purpose)
  2. Contact your IRA administrator and direct the gift to Purdue University at:
Dick and Sandy Dauch Alumni Center
    403 West Wood Street
    West Lafayette, IN 47907
    Associated tax ID: 35-6002041

Please instruct your IRA administrator to add your name to the reference field.

Visit the Office on Planned Giving online for additional details on supporting Purdue via an IRA QCD.
